Some Music Notes
Sept. 8, 2009
Hey There Soli Members!

Five of the pieces we are singing this semester are movements from Handel's Messiah. This is copyright free music, and we are photocopying it for our use at a very reasonable price. We'll be able to mark Brad's tempos and instructions on these clean copies without being confused by previous performance guidelines.

Many of us already own the entire score, but we will NOT use these personal scores this semester. There would be way too much page turning and associated noise. Please respect this request- it really isn't negotiable.

On a related note, please bring your black folder to put these pages in from the first rehearsal onward. Stapling these pages increases the cost significantly, so we'll leave them separate. It is easy to mix pages from one song with another in their loose state, so corralling them in your folder makes it easy.

Your cooperation makes everything go smoother!

SOME IMPORTANT ADDITIONS TO THE HANDBOOK

There are some new additions to this year's handbook. A paper copy will be included in yopur music packet, and there will be a digital copy on the Soli website (www.solideogloriacs.org) soon. Please take a couple of minutes to read through it at your leisure.

 GUM CHEWING
Surest Way to Drive Our    Accompanist Insane

From junior high on, every choir director worth his or her salt has beaten into our heads that gum chewing is incompatible with and unacceptable when singing. None the less, some of us have medical conditions, such as dry mouth, that necessitate gum. If you must chew gum, please do it discreetly.

SAME OLD SONG,

BUT WITH A WHOLE NEW MEANING

From Time Immemorial, every Soli handbook has contained the sentence, "Rehearsal starts promptly at 7 PM." We'll strive this semester to give that phrase a grounding in fact.

Our new schedule look like this:
6:30 - 6:45  Socializing
6:45- 6:55  Announcements
6:55 - 6:59:59 Warmups
7:00  Rehearsal Actually Starts with the Downbeat and a Smiling Director

Please spend time catching up with your friends from 6:30 to 6:45. Don't be shy - we have the room reserved, starting at 6:30 PM.

We aim to be seated and attentive at 6:45. You'll notice that announcements and warmups are not part of rehearsal. We need to maximize our actual rehearsal time.

If you arrive after rehearsal has begun,  please wait for an appropriate pause in the action before finding a seat.

Sincerely,

Tina Phillips
